Step Six: Programming (Part I)

Here are some essential questions to ask as you begin this assignment:

1. Can professionalism skills be explicitly taught? How do you create buy-in?

2. How to you respond to learners to are at very different places in their career journey?

3. How do you find space to include professionalism, meta-cognitive, and life skills in an already full curriculum?

4. What is the appropriate response for students that are not wanting to develop a career at this point in their lives?

Assignment:

Read pp. 17-20 In the TECC MODEL Overview and read materials below. Next, write a summary of what the program is already doing to teach professionalism skills. Hold a team meeting to discuss how your program will respond to learners that are in very different places on their career journey. Look specifically at the section of the TECC Model Overview that addresses this conundrum. What could work in your program or what are you already doing to address this issue? Then, develop and implement a lesson plan for teaching one new professionalism skill to students. Describe when it will be taught and the target audience? Stand alone workshop? Part of class?

Step Six: Programming (Part II)

Here are some essential questions to ask as you begin this assignment:

1. How do we create content for individualized, small career cohorts, and large career cohorts?

2. What is the refreshed role of experiential, project based, and blended learning models under WIOA?

3. What makes contextualization meaningful? Does it have to correspond to an individual career path or are the skills

transferable enough that they still hold meaning?

Assignment:

Read pp. 21-26 in the TECC MODEL Overview and review materials below. Next, arrange for your team to have an adventure: walk to a coffee shop, visit a museum, go swimming together, take a hike, eat dinner together. During the adventure, explore ways that you can incorporate more project based and experiential learning into your program. Come up with one small project that you can implement either during the remainder of this year, or in fall. Take pictures on your outing. Then, with your team, talk about the use of blended learning, PBL, and experiential learning. Discuss the readings. Cycle back to week one assignment of making a PD plan for readings...how did it go? Finally, complete STEP SIX in your Action Plan.

Step Seven: Professional Development for Teachers and Staff

Here are some essential questions to ask as you begin this assignment:

1. How can we pay teachers and staff for research, exploration, and intensive curriculum development?

2. How do we develop Professional Learning Communities where teachers plan together and teach together?

3. How do we give teachers a say in program development?

4. What should PD focus on, as we can’t change everything all at once?

5. How do we sustain paid PD for Career Pathways overtime?

Assignment:

Read pp. 27 In TECC MODEL Overview and review attached materials. Could PBL and Blended Learning models help support PD in your program? Meet with each member of staff and faculty to discuss their individual PD needs in terms of developing Career Pathways in your program. Consider their role in each of the Action Plan steps. Use the attached form, one you already have, or make a new one. Finally, complete STEP SEVEN in your action plan.
